Shakin' Stevens took his cover version of a 1956 hit to number 1 in the UK singles chart in 1981.

This week in 1981, Green door by Shakin' Stevens reached number 1 in the UK singles chart, replacing Ghost town by the Specials. It had entered the top 40 the previous week at number 22. The song relinquished its hold on the top spot after four weeks and was succeeded by Japanese boy by Aneka. Two more weeks in the top 10 followed, then another two in the top 40 before the record left the chart.

The gold-selling Green door was released on the Epic record label and was the second number 1 for Shakin' Stevens following February's This ole house. It was the second single taken from his platinum-selling, number 1 album Shaky.

This was not the first time Green door had been a top 10 hit in the UK. In 1956, Frankie Vaughan had taken the song to number 2 and Jim Lowe had reached number 8. Also in that year, a version by Glen Mason peaked at number 24.
