Don't you want me by the Human League reached the top of the UK singles chart thirty years ago this week, having entered the top 40 the previous week at number 9. It replaced Begin the beguine (volver a empezar) by Julio Iglesias as the highest selling record. After five weeks at number 1, including the period over Christmas and into the new year, the song was succeeded at the top by The land of make believe by Bucks Fizz.
The record stayed in the top 10 for another two weeks after falling from the top spot. A further three weeks in the lower top 40 followed before the song left the chart.
Don't you want me was released on the Virgin record label and was the Human League's only number 1 hit in the UK. It was the final track taken from the triple platinum-selling album Dare, which spent four weeks at the top of the UK album chart. The single was certified platinum and was also a number 1 in the USA.
A remix of Don't you want me was released in 1995 and peaked at number 16. The Farm recorded a cover version of the song in 1992 and took it to number 18.
