Goodnight girl by Wet Wet Wet reached the top of the UK singles chart twenty years ago this week replacing Bohemian rhapsody / These are the days of our lives by Queen. It had entered the top 40 three weeks previously at number 20 and broke into the top 10 in its second week.
After four weeks at the top, the song was succeeded by Stay by Shakespear's Sister. The single remained in the top 10 for another two weeks after falling from the top spot and the final week of the record's chart life was spent at number 21.
Goodnight girl was released on the Precious Organisation record label and was the second of three UK number ones for Wet Wet Wet. It was the third track taken from the platinum-selling album High on the happy side, which spent two weeks at the top of the UK album chart.
