My sweet lord by George Harrison entered the UK singles chart at number 1 this week in 2002, replacing More than a woman by Aaliyah. After just one week at the top, the song made way for Hero by Enrique.
The single remained in the top 10 for another two weeks after falling from the top spot. A further two weeks in the lower top 40 followed before the record left the chart.
My sweet lord was re-issued on the Parlophone record label in 2002 following George Harrison's death the previous November. It had originally been released in 1971 when its had reached number 1 in many countries including the UK and the USA. The track was taken from the album All things must pass, which topped the UK album chart for eight weeks.
The song was the subject of a decade-long copyright infringement lawsuit. The court found that Harrison had subconsciously copied He's so fine by the Chiffons and ordered him to pay damages in 1981.
